Thx guys.

The car was painted by a friend I met while he was doing his engineering co-op at my work.
He paints cars in his spare time out in Campbelville.

Took about 2 weeks, but that is with him getting at it in his spare time. Also, my car was in decent shape and I had done most of the prep work myself.
I removed decals, filled and sanded chips and scratches, removed mirrors, spoiler and signal pc's.
He just had to finish up covering the areas where the decals were, repair a tear in the front bumper and sand down the car.

As for cost i have no idea.
a while ago i inherited a 2000 VW Golf TDI when my father-in-law passed away...my friend is a VW guy so he offered to paint the fiero for the Golf.

I'll see if he wants to take on more work and pass on his info to anyone interested in getting a quote.

I would definitely be interested in a quote. I have a friend who I've been talking to about painting my car for two years now, and he's always too busy.

Not a lot has happened on the Fiero lately. I decided to see how the rear sheet metal would fit.

Being it's 88 sheet metal and my car is an 84, there was a mild difference. The lower frame rail needs to be enlarged slightly for the wider strut tower. Several judicious blows with a hammer in the offending area takes care of that!
Image

Now, although this sheet metal came from a California car, it ended up rusting away from our Canadian winter and climate. I just can't have this so off with the frame rails to really see the damage.

And make a new panel on the band saw in 16 gauge.
Image

The rust beneath...Ugh.
Image

Not real bad here.

Frame rails are usable. After slight tweaking that is.

So I decided to install the fastback and check for fitment. It looked good and I was getting slightly excited. Since the 88 sheet metal I got came from a car that was hit, I simply cannot get some mounting pads to line up. After some double checking of measurement's, it appears as though I'm out-of-square. So, it looks like I'm back to the beginning and see what moved. No biggie though.

After I get my 88 on the road, I'm gonna strip my 87 down to the frame and bring it to you for rebuild ;)

Nice work again, I'm sure you'll get it all figured out. I spent a little time prepping more stuff for my winter checklist, but you're a tough act to follow :)

Unfortunately I got a bit of a leak on my taping job, so there's some overspray on this panel. I tried some paint thinner, but no joy there. I guess this paint is gonna stick anyway.

I fixed my horn on the rhs. Lotsa road grime and surface rust. Took it and the bracket off, cleaned and lubed everything up. Adjusted the little screw a bit. Now it sounds almost like new and not like an anemic little civic.

I know what you mean about the horn. I was driving one day and passed my daughter walking down the street, so I honked. I get she was glad she wasn't with anybody and had to explain that was her dad driving the car that just went 'Meep Meep' at her

Got my passenger door panel and speaker on today. Speaker isn't wired up yet, but it is hooked up inside the door. Now to tap into the rear speaker wires. Haven't decided if I'm going to leave the seat speakers hooked up or not, I can barely hear them because they're muffled by the seat covers.

Okay, I have a little time to work on the car again. Since the 88 rear sheet metal was twisted too badly, I decided to use the 87 rear end that I had. It's in about the same shape and since it had rust, I just had to remove it. Follow along as I do the repair.

Here's the 87 hulk.
Image

As you can see what the problem is.
Image

Remove the offending area and you're left with this.
Image

Start with some 16 gauge sheet metal and put a 90° edge into it.
Image

Cut it on the band saw.
Image

Image

Tack it in place.
Image

Note: I made my patches longer than necessary! I did this because the frame rails still need to be welded in. I'll cut the excess off with the plasma cutter once the frame rails are fully installed.
Image

Upper inner rail being made.

Trial fit.
Image

Partially welded in.

I do need to tweak the outer frame rails but that's for another day.
