Better to be safe than sorry...doesnt just happen to Fieros though. I've seen around 3 car fires on the side of the 401 this year on my daily commute.
Worth it to buy one for your DD too.

Glad you're ok. You live to Fiero another day!!

YEAH, but usually a fire starts and spreads so quickly and gets so hot that there's not enough time or extinguisher material to put it out quickly enough.
a car can be fixed/replaced...your ass, not so much!

The insurance will usually let you buy it back for salvage price which is 200-300, I've done it a couple times as has a buddy. Just be sure to ask because they do not volunteer that option.

I didn't bother asking about buying it for salvage. I figured the only thing worth anything are the front rims and tires, and they wouldn't fetch that much even though they're as good as new (only about 1,000km on them). I'll try to find out what yard the car ends up in just in case somebody wants to pick over the front end. The gen 2 headlight wiring harness is possibly still intact, but can't say for sure because the fire did make it up far enough to torch the blower motor I had just put in a week ago.

In a lot of cases that's true, unfortunately in my case I could have saved the car if I had one available. There probably would have been some serious damage to the wiring harness given where the fire started (based on where I saw the flames and smoke) but still would have been able to salvage the car.
