QS3387....fits the Fiero V6 (and my Chevy Optra luckily!!)

Actually , they are not made by the same manufacturer. I've seen The link you posted before and all the discussion on Pennocks. This study is 5 years old, but even then, the QS filters were made by Purolator and they were made better than Fram. Compare the 1st & 3rd rows - cardboard vs metal endcaps.

I wanted to see if the 2008 QS filter in that study still compared to the ones i bought today. So i got the can opener and compared a Fram PH3387 to a Quaker State QS3387. Both are marked "made in USA" Fram is distributed by Honeywell QS is distributed by Sopus...I dont know if they are related. EDIT: internet search reveals Sopus is Shell Oil Products US. Not related to Honeywell If they were made by the same manufacturer, they are not built to the same standards. Fram weight 212 Grams QS weight 228 Grams open them up and you can see the difference right away. Fram has Cardboard endcaps still QS still has solid metal endcaps Looking at the filter cartridges... Fram has unorganized, poorly assembled filter media with 39 pleats QS has well assembled filter media with 58 pleats Rubber gasket on top is loose on the Fram and fitted on the QS. Looking at the construction of the filter carts, the Fram is a doughnut allowing oil to go in and around the cartridge. QS filter is a closed unit forcing oil to go thru the filter media. Probably builds more oil pressure too. All in all, I think the QS filter is better. So when it goes on sale i scoop them up...espesially since they fit 2 of my cars

well that an impresive demonstration. I'll admit it's better then the Q-state internally. Now all the Q-state need is the that outter grab section the frame uses, main reasons I buy the frame. 90% of the time I'm changing the filter by sense of touch rather then looking at it, I can easily grab the frame and turn it without any tools required. guess I should get a tough guard & compare it to an regular frame to see if there is any difference, my preference of choice. I've notice canadian tire around me have started carrying "Defense" filters. Anyone know who makes them?

I like the Fram filters for the sure grip stuff on top too...but the internal build quality just doesnt justify the price. The Fram tough guard is the same construction as the extra, but it has a tighter filter media that traps more particulate. I have yet to see a Defense oil filter, however all the research i've done shows they are a re-branded orange Fram. Also, the Red motomasters seem to be re-branded orange Frams too...so save yourself a $1.50 and buy one of those.

I went on a mission today to get air filters for both my cars (85 Fiero V6 and 06 Chev Optra) After going to 4 places i finally found both of them....Also picked up a defense oil filter as well... It's made by Honeywell and proudly states it's "make in the USA". Retail is $4.27 It's lighter by far to the others. At first glance construction appears to be radically different than the Orange Fram and other Honeywell rebrands. Filter media is tight and organized. There is a plastic skeleton inside instead of a metal cylinder. I have not taken it apart yet to see the full construction but i imagine its cheap. ON A SIDE NOTE: Look at the defense air filter i bought for the 2.8. It is EXACTLY the same as the Fram!!! (i compared the 2 in store) Both are made by Honeywell, both are made in Canada, both have the exact filter media with yellow stripes on them. The only difference is the Fram has Orange rubber where the Defense has Black. Fram is 8 bucks and the Defense is $5.89 Save a couple bucks and get the Defense Filter!!

quick update for anyone else who used the Frams, I normally bought the tough guard series from Walmart for $7 a piece. Walmart has recently changed thier supplier so now they are carrying Bosch & Purolator filters. So unless you want to pay crappy tires prices, looks like switching oil filters.

Since actually looking into oil filters I've been using Napa Golds. I believe they're made by WIX. They're pricier by a couple of $, but I believe they're much better than the Frams internally. I can't get over the cardboard on the inside of the Frams, once I learned about it I stopped using them right away. They must also have a weaker BPV in them, because if I use one on my truck the lifters (I think) will cause a racket once in a while for a second on startup after sitting, where that never happens with the Napa Gold filter in there. I've never tried Quaker State filters, but it's nice to know they're an option at CT/Partsource for when I can't get to Napa. I think I missed the sale, but I will keep my eye out for next time. I think on sale like that they're about half the price of the Napa Golds.

Just a quick update... I cut the used QS and Defense filters to see what they looked like after 5000k These were in my 2006 Chevy Optra 5 and i use Quaker State synthetic in that car. Here is the QS...looks the same as when it went in...but black. The defense filter did well too..the filter media was not deformed and looks ok...only thing i can say is that the cardboard end caps look like they were disintegrating a bit...Probably fibers coming off and contaminating the oil...but all in all no big issues. I would say though, that the defense filter is actually Better than the Fram one...and its made by the same company...and its almost half the price!!

Walmart is now carrying Bosch & Puralator. Would like to see those two evaluated. I could save a couple used ones to see what they look like after use, just don't have anything to cut them open.
