Depending on how gauge-happy you want to go, you may want to look at an OBD2 interface to a small tablet using the Torque app, depending on how many sensors are readable with that engine.

Lunatic got me hooked on this setup - I'm using it with my Nissan Titan which has a fraction of the sensors available that GMs generally do. I got a 7" Samsung tablet for this purpose for cheap. It isn't quite as maintenance free as permanent gauges would be though, so even for general setup it is worth looking at.

I got BT and wifi interfaces from Amazon/Aliexpress. They work but are inconsistent, so i am now using a hardwire interface as the "permanent" installation.

I think really the only "need" I have is for oil pressure. Water temp is good as long as you don't seize the pump so could replace/supplement with oil temp which is primarily what the water is for anyway (I know we could have a debate). Also we all know how we like to ignore the dummy lights. I gained the volt meter & water temp when I swapped the non-GT gauge cluster (in the main housing) so I now have room for three.

Agree 100% Brian...I put a oil temp gauge in the Indy and it really isn't telling me much. The oil pressure is nice to have though.

Well the Riviera has arrived and the teardown has moved along quite well this evening. Fluids drained, all hoses & most electical disconnects off the engine (I've left the connections on the engine itself in-tact)

I'm though a little stumped on how to separate the main wiring harness at the firewall. It would seem that I can open the cover at the backs, but to get it to separate where I seem to think it should has me perplexed.

Any assistance appreciated.

It's funny how much we forget on a regular basis. Our own C-Connector uses a 6mm bolt to hold the 2-halfs together, well ah ...

2 observations
1) WOW there is a lot of wiring
2) WOW there is a lot of wiring ...

Well, methinks everything other than mounts and axles are disconnected. I think the next hurtle will be the rearward motor mount. Looks like they've used a massive torx or allen boit from the bottom, meaning I'd most likely need to attack this one from above. The other 3 mounts are all easily accessible - 2 tanny & 1 dogbone/hanger. I could elect to drop it through which as my original intent, but I've managed to pretty much remove the entire front structure so the lift would be all of 1 foot.

She's out. Rear motor mount was easily removed from the block rather than the cradle. Now to make sure I grab everything as the car heads off to the wreckers Monday!

Comparing my original list

Engine ... check
Transmission ... check
Auto linkage cables & shifter ... I'm missing the front short cable from the fiero, which goes from the shifter to the steering column, but otherwise complete
Wiring Harness ... I have the harness connecting all engine components to the firewall connection (do I need anything other wiring?)
Computer .... check (do I need the connectors which attach the internal wiring harness to the CPU?)
Motor mounts ... check
Axels ... check

Please advise and offer any other goodie I should grab while the car is here (3 more days!)

Thanks!

You may want the OBDii connector from the inside.

Is the center mirror interesting at all ie. auto dim, garage door opener buttons?

Fall is here so time to get going on this again. An F40 has come up on Kijiji. I do like the auto behind Blondie's 3800sc, but have heard (specifically here) not to destroy my Getrag 5-Speed and use it. I will be hopping up the new engine a bit and have read mixed feeling about the F40. So ...

Thoughts on picking up the F40?
Is $1200.00 a reasonable figure?
Should I be concerned about the axle situation?

Any advice is appreciated. Timely please as I know these go for $1k us stateside.

Remind me what the F40 is used in again?

Of course Wikipedia is your friend, but I knew it as the 6-speed behind the G6 GTP 3900. As my goal is somewhere around 350+ ft/lbs, my affordable options for a robust manual transmission are somewhat limited.

As long as you aren't drag racing on slicks or radials I would expect that transmission to hold up to that level of tq.

I asked as there is a saab version, the 2011+ buick regal version and many European versions as well.

Just something to think about, I don't know how much clutches are for that transmission, but usually what happens is people wheel hop it, and crack the transmission housing, spilling fluid all over the clutch ruining it as well.

That is your main thing to look out for, wheel hop. I have no idea where you find axles and everything needed for that swap, but if you do the swap, it should be a fun drive after.

The clutch is the $ issue. It's a dual-force (whatever than means) and Holden (GM) is the only one making one so it's also $1200.00 + $400.00 to get it here. All in all, about $4k to get 'r done.
