I had a car many moons ago that had a leak in the rear main seal on the crank that would get very bad (james bond smoke cloud) at anything over 70kph but basically nothing at less than that. Any chance it could be that?

Nope, it was the valve cover gasket. I got the new one in and no more smoke :-)
