I just got back after a drive in my '88 Automatic Fiero to Kitchener and back via Burlington. The car ran very well and consumed about 10 liters per 100 Kilometers. Now for the problem, as I exited onto the Kitchner ramp, the car start shaking and stalled, just like stopping a manual without pressing the clutch. The car started but without any hesitation, but when I put it into gear it stalled, back in park and start no problem but when I put it into gear it stalled. this went on for about a dozen times and then the car ran well again. The same thing happened on the exit ramp to Burlington. Anybody know what could be wrong. From Burlington to Toronto I did not have any problem even though I drove back in bumper to bumper traffic.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks.

Sounds to me like the transmission is locking up. There's something in your tranny called 'torque converter lockup' or something like that. What I believe it does is it locks the converter so you have a relatively direct connection between the engine and the transmission for better mileage when cruising. If it were to lock up when it shouldn't I would guess it would give you exactly the symptoms you're getting right now.

Have a look here, this might be your fix:

Apparently you can just disconnect the switch as a workaround until you get a new one if that is the problem.

I have replaced the Lock up solenoid and the pressure switch. I made a trip to Barrie and back, the car is running great.

Had this problem too in my formula this summer.
Still haven't gotten to fixing it, but she's parked now for the winter back in Ottawa. Seems like a pretty reasonable fix and will be the first thing I do when shes out of storage!!

I've been needing to check into the forum more often!

No. The mechanic just called the supply place and they brought it to him.
