Shredded my alt belt on the 401. I guess it knocked off the main belt. Temperature shot up in a flash. My record of not being on the back of a tow truck is broken :(

Ahhhhh... you alternator is normally on your main belt (accessories), the S/C should have it's own belt. Least that's how it is on my GTP.

Yeah, so the main belt shredded and to the SC belt with it. Found it lying on top of the cradle when I stopped. Went to Canadian Tire but they didn't have either belt in stock and they can't get them until Wednesday. Looks like I'm off the road until next weekend. There were bits of belt wrapped around the alternator and even stuck in the right rear caliper.

Here's one of the 'belt leavings'. You can see the puddle of anti-freeze I left on the road :(

how old was the belt? Is it a custom size for your swap?

I think the belt may have been the one that came with the engine - it was Delco. Probably dried out from sitting around for who knows how long. It was squealing a little bit so I put some belt conditioner on it to cut the noise until I got new ones. In retrospect, I probably shouldn't have done that. If the squeal was getting worse I probably would have replaced the belts before this happened. So I masked the symptom instead of fixing the problem.... kinda like putting a band-aid on a knife wound.

BTW, does anybody have a picture or diagram of the belt routing on a 3800 with the low alt mount like the one Dan makes?

Or....... does anybody remember those paper placemats they used to give to kids at restaurants and there was a maze and you used a crayon to draw your path through the maze? Well this is kinda the same thing :p
