I am looking into putting an 88 cradle in a 86 fiero. I have the craddle and trailing arms, stuts, knuckles etc. I have been throwing back and forth the idea of using either the 2.2L ecotec from a cobalt, or the supercharged 2.0L ecotec from the cobalt. what have others used? I have the 2.5L right now, and the 3spd auto tranny. Will the ecotec bolt up to my transmission?

I don't think the ecotec will bolt up to a 2.5L......

There aren't many people who have done the ecotec engines in their Fiero's, I know of three..........one is driving in kitchener I think, there's my build up and CCfiero's build in texas.

Okay, so i will have to do a full transmission and engine swap? since i have the auto, how would the linkages work out? I'm looking to put in the ecotec as the aftermarket is huge for it, my sister works at GM and can get the stand alone ECM and i do not want a crammed engine compartment. Also the ecotec block is good for up to 1200 HP no problem.

are you going to keep the ecotec as a auto or swap to manual........either way you will need some custom work done to get it working right.

That i have not decided! I have always wanted a manual.
And ohniko, im not building a 1200hp ecotec but, i have seen them before under high boost. I know they can handle, and after market is massive. Also GM has a large support for the engines. The iron dukes just dont have the aftermarket and the bottom ends cant handle much more power ive been told.

I think a turbo Ecotech would be an ideal swap. Jeremy's build shows how to fit it in a fiero with a custom made cradle based on the 88. I'm sure the 88 can be modded for the install. As for building up the power on the eco tech, do you have the offical "Cook Book" GM made for this motor? I know they used to have it on thier website at one point in time. Nate from OCC is a GM mechanic and well know in the cobalt community, he runs EnVy automotive and can build up the motor.

I do plan on working with a turbo EcoTec in the future. Does that GM stand alone computer come with a boost controller? Is it the one they used for the Ariel Atom? How much do they want for it?

Yup that was a thought. The dragster originally had a 600hp plus turbocharged flat four VW engine.
Figured if the Ecotek could be built to make that kind of HP and pull no weight, it should fly.

I would love that manuel! My dads friend owns Astro Automotive which is a engine machine shop in Woodbridge and he built my last motor. Im looking for a used motor, ill get him to replace the cam bearings, hone the cylinders and port the head. The rest I'm thinking of doing myself. As for how much the ECM is im not sure I can look into it, and ask if it has a boost controller.
I have an 88 cradle, im going to use the original cradle and just do some of my own "special touches" on it.
I'm likeing the feedback, and that others are getting into the idea

I have to replace the 2.5 as well. My Fiero is the 5 speed manual which I like. Would it be better to drop the whole ecotec powertain in rather than try to match the ecotech engine to my transmission?

Yes, as far as I know there is no way to match the ecotec to your isuzu bellhousing and if there is you dont really want to keep that trans anyway. A lot of the guys are swapping to the newer manual trans styles.
