I'm starting to plan on what needs to be done on my car to get it ready for the spring. Shortly before putting it away for the winter I started having a couple of problems that point to the alternator being shot. Does anybody have any suggestions/wisdom on the best place to get a replacement?

upgrade to an 88 style C130. It's bolts right in place, you just need to change the harness connector. I did the upgrade on my 2.8L rebuild, then after that I got rid of the trunk fan that "suposed" to cool the alternator & coil. Only kicks in when your rad fan does, plus this was deleted in all 88 V6 fieros.

Thanks! A few questions.....Where did you get yours, I'm guess I should get the 105 AMP not the 85?

How does this one look?

Actually, that is the same one I got. I found one from a GM 3.1L FWD cavalier (91) brought it to the alternator rebuild shop I use for my upgrades and had him put on the proper bracket needed for the fiero.

That's good to hear, I'll probably order this one then, but will probably have it shipped to Lewiston to save a bundle on shipping. Where is your rebuild shop? It would probably be easiest to take it there seeing as they probably already know what they're facing.

The rebuild shop I use in on Comstock between Pharmacy & Warden in scarborough. It's not too far from my place.

I checked with the guy on eBay, and he said he's got one that is a direct fit for the '88 Fiero (he called it a 7802 model). So my question is, do I still need the bracket made, or do I just need the adapter for the electrical hookup?

If it a direct replacement for the 88 Fieros, you just need the connector.

That's good news, so now my next and hopefully last question is, where do I get the connector? Would any parts shop carry it, is it just a pigtail I need that would be soldered on in place of my current connector?

Ok, two questions :p

I got my alternator from a srape yard, so I cut the connector off with it. Might try a alternator rebuild shop, they couls sell them. Used to be able to get the off the shelf from crappy tire but that style is getting old now, might have a hard time finding it there.

The alternator just arrived in Lewiston yesterday, so just need to pick it up and get the pigtail. PartSource carries two that come up as being the right thing, but will be best to get the alternator in my hands before I order.

One shows as 'BWD PT5768 - HP4390 Alternator Harness'

and the other as 'BWD PT200 - Voltage Regulator Pigtail'

they are technically the same alternator harness connector. Depending on what vehicle it went into, decided how many wires where connected to the alternator. Later vehicles had the regulator controlled by the ECM but the 88 didn't so you will only be using two wires. The larger RED wire and a brown wire.

Got the pigtail today, but the stupid thing has 2 brown wires! Do I use the F or the L? F is closest to the red, L is beside the P. Here's my post on PFF

replied to you pennocks topic but cap off the middle brown wire with heat shrink tubbing. Use the outside brown wire & red wire.
