New engine was finally in and ran nicely till first test drive then a bad vibration followed by a slight knocking sound.
Checked every thing over dropped oil pan and every thing is good. Fire engine and you can actually feel the vibrations coming off the flywheel.
So at this point time to drop it again and pull the flywheel to see what is up with it. Wondering just how out of balance flywheel would have to be to cause a problem.

The autopsy continues..... started taking the pistons out today, and what do you know..... the rod bearing on the #1 cylinder, which just happens to be the area where the knock was coming from, was spun. It doesn't look horribly bad, but I only put about 15 km on the engine after it started to rattle. All the lifters appear to be in decent shape despite the cam being badly pitted, one had a score down the middle of the roller but that's it, and that could have come from the metals shavings in the oil. Think I'm going to give up on my plans to rebuild this engine given the bumble-bee springs, the wrecked cam, the spun bearing, and who knows what else.

I "always" install new bearings, oil pump, timing chain & gears, gaskets and seals on "all" engines I install. Especially on used engines. More so important if I personally haven't heard it run! If my clients don't want to spend a little extra on this insurance, then I don't do the install. It's just not worth it.

Strange thing was, this was the flywheel that was on the old engine, and I wasn't getting the vibration. It could have been the cause of the malfunction though, just putting things off kilter enough to make everything unbalanced.

I have done more 3800 manual tranny swaps then I want to count, most had proper machined and balanced flywheels where some just machined down and not balanced and never seen any thing like this one. Machinists main comment was that the flywheel was most likely a Chinese piece of crap with too porous of metal or internal cracks either way I tossed the old one into the scrap pile just to be safe. Good thing is the machinist did the work and balancing for $150 and it use to cost me more then that just to get one machined else where.
For the 3800 engines only real problems are usually leaking lower intake and valve cover gaskets but in cases where unknown amounts of work have been done you never know what you will find

Well it looks like other than the problem with the MAF, this thing is running just fine now, I appreciate all the work you put into this hellish swap. A new set of plugs and she's got lots of get up and go, the hesitation is gone. Now fix the bumpy idle and I'll be happy to finish the season driving it the way it is. First thing in the fall I'm going to get to the bottom of the yellow drippy s@#%, then on to the brakes, noisy heater blower fan, rear tie rod ends etc. etc.... Then if I can save a few bucks up over the winter I'm going to take all the body panels off and get them painted at my buddy's body shop.
