Well spent the better part of the day today in Southampton helping (very little) Dan pull what was left of my first 3800 out. When he dropped the drain plug you could actually see bits of metal in the oil. Not sure what went wrong but I'll be tearing the old engine down to see if there is anything left worth salvaging. From the look of the oil, I'm thinking maybe the springs, and Dan thinks there's a shot the cam can be salvaged if I get it polished.

I'm sorry to hear of your engine troubles. That sucks! I'd offer my assistance but driving to Dan's is too far for me. Hope you get it all back together and on the road soon.

I've got the bulk of the old engine torn down - intake manifold, water pump, timing chain and gears, heads. Don't have any tools for taking the springs off though. I need to get the cam and springs up to Dan, and no way I'm shipping the whole heads, so it's either get them off or make the drive when I can. Had to work a fair bit this weekend, so maybe they'll cut me some slack and let me take an afternoon off next week.

Yeah, good catch.... definitely got the bumblebee thing happening on the one head. No idea how it ended up like that though

the three odd balls, intake or exhaust? wonder if the previous builder had damaged them already and replaced them with stock?

That does not look right at all and makes me wonder what else was done wrong on the engine build. Did you find very many loose rods from spun bearings

Also is there one set of push rods that are original and one set new as one set looks a lot cleaner then the other. Did you get the cam out yet and check for scratches or any bad marks

I finally got around to getting the cam out tonight, and as I was pulling it out I kept my eye on the condition, and everything was looking pretty good until I got the very back end. On first look it actually looked like there was very tiny writing on it, like something had been stamped on it....... Not good :(

Oh, and also I head something drop into the bottom of what I think was the #1 cylinder, pretty sure it was a lifter.

You normally take the lifters out before you remove the cam. ;)

Surprised you even got the cam out with the lifters still in

I was kinda surprised myself. I didn't have time to take out all the lifters so I thought I'd give it a try figuring the cam was the only thing that might have been salvageable, but it came out really easily just by spinning it and drawing back slowly.

I'm curious which valve that lobe corresponds to, intake ? Possibly the odd matching of springs caused the valves to vibrate, float, vibrating on the lifter on the cam lobe.

Definitely looks like the valve train was the problem then once you get some metal filings in the oil all hell brakes loose pretty fast.
